What are we fund raising for?

We are urgently fundraising to bring a Hazara family to Australia from Afghanistan to escape danger and persecution by the Taliban.

How did I come to know Ali?

I got involved working with refugees after I lost my first baby and needed something with purpose to put my mind to. I started off making some music projects with a couple of guys who had been stuck in offshore detention for 10 years to try to draw attention to their plight to put pressure on the government to release them. Through the attention that these projects brought, a lot of other people who needed help started to reach out.

Ali and I have been talking now for nearly two years, and I am proud to call him a friend. He is working so hard to save his family and exploring every possible option for their future.

How do we plan on using the funds raised?

We plan to apply to sponsor Ali’s family under the Community Support Program. This includes his widowed mother, brother, and three sisters.

The total cost of the Community Support Program process is approximately $73,000.

The cost of the application process includes:

Community Support Program Assessment: $3,685

Visa Lodgement: $9,055

Visa Application Charge PA: $535 (x6) = $3210

Home Affairs Visa Application Charge: $7.270 (x6) = 43,620

Emergency Services Bond: $14,430

Where are Ali and his family now?

On 15 August 2021 the world watched in horror as the Taliban re-took control of Afghanistan and Afghan people desperately tried to escape.

Thanks to the support we have received so far, the family was able to escape from Kabul to Pakistan.

Although they are currently safer than they were, as Hazaras, they are easily recognisable, and as a persecuted minority even in Pakistan, they are still in danger.

Ali is even more at risk due to his previous work as a doctor treating Afghan police and army. They live in constant fear and rarely leave their accommodation.

They urgently need help to get to Australia to restart their lives as soon as possible.

Ali has already applied for humanitarian visas but the wait for these visas is years long. That is why we want to apply to sponsor under the Community Support Program.

* For the sake of safety and anonymity, we have used the pseudonym Ali. This is particularly important because of the immediate and extreme danger Ali and his family are facing as targets of the Taliban in hiding.

The Perks

We believe that the biggest perk is to know that every cent you donate will go towards providing a future for Ali and his family.

However, for the particularly generous contributions of $100 or more there are a few extra little things that as an artist/musician I would like to donate as my way of saying thank you on Ali’s behalf.

Here are a few:

Free ticket to concert in Sydney with my beautiful group Meremba https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ufO5ocedoS4

Free watercolour portrait – I paint both beloved pets and beloved humans and would love to paint a little portrait (15cm x 15cm) as a lasting reminder of the change you have helped bring about!
